The 2009 Nobel Prize for Literature went to Herta Muller (two dots over the “u”) – a Romanian born, German author & poet. Wikipedia already has a small bio on her and a list of her works up, – but I think this write up from Dickinson College is more informative.
The prize is meant to be awarded to the person who creates “in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction”. Whatever that means. I’ll be doing some more research at lunch on this year’s winner. I have a feeling a lot of other people will be as well.
I’ve been doing some research too, since most of the newswires only had basic info and stats. Other than the standard Wikipedia stuff, I also found some write-ups on Infloox (http://www.infloox.com/person?id=4da75d24 ) where they talk about her literary influences and more background info.
