It’s Monday! What are you reading?*

And there’s the rub… what am I reading?  Most of my Sunday was spent  trying to decide what to read next.  I’ve been looking through the piles of TBR’s on my bookshelves, trawling the blogs to see what everyone else is recommending and trying to figure out how “role playing” fits into GoodReads (umm…yeah).    Plus, my credits on just renewed. I’ll need to choose an audio book for the week as well.

The audio book should be easy.  I’ve narrowed it down to Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger or The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters – both seem suitably sad and spooky for the Fall.  As for the other…

I picked up two older Hilary Mantel novels last weekend: Vacant Possession and A Change of ClimateWolf Hall is sitting next to the bed, but that thing is the size of the Bible!  (I am visiting relatives in two weeks and it may be the book to bring; when not reading I’ll use it to beat back my nephew for the t.v. remote.  Remember, it’s all about multi-purposing!).   I’ve learned that one of the traps of blogging is trying to keep posts current, which means reading a lot of newer releases or books that are relevant to what’s going on in the world.  It’s a big part of what I love about reading.  It also can be a bit exhausting having set that kind of internal bar.  Stepping out of the 24-hour news cycle looks pretty attractive.

SO!  I’m open for suggestions.  It’s Monday… what’s everybody reading?  And, honestly, don’t you wish you were reading it here?

  1. I do not think I cold do it if I tried to keep up with the news. I read for reviews, but ultimately I read a wide variety of books, ld and new, because I am in the mood for them. I have an extensive TBR list which helps, since I never know exactly what I will be in the mood for.

    1. Jennifer –

I think you may have the right idea. If you come across anything you particularly enjoy, please let me know. I’m always looking.

    1. J. Kaye –

I KNOW! I think it’s riding on the tailcoats of The Time Traveler’s Wife, because the reviews don’t look very complimentary. Which is a shame – I heard an interview with the author on the Guardian Books podcast last week and she’s very interesting. I’ve never read anything by her, and was thinking to start with Her Fearful Symmetry, but now I think I’ll give it a pass.

  2. I never managed to get very far with Her Fearful Symmetry — maybe I’ll try it again later.

Wolf Hall is sitting on my pile of books coming up as well, I’m looking forward to it a lot — hope it’s good — it’s one of my favorite eras to read about.

And I would love to have that for my library — what a heavenly room for reading!

I have a feeling Wolf Hall will be great. I’m very glad it won the Booker.

In the end I bypassed Her Fearful Symmetry and am now listening to The Little Stranger. So far I’m happy with my choice.

The photo is of the Morning Room at the Athenaeum Club in London. (check out their library here – . I’m so jealous of the British and their Clubs. Someplace to go that isn’t work.
